Deer Isle is a granite island in Penobscot Bay, approximately 13 miles in length, 21 miles in circumference. A large suspension bridge (WPA project in 1937) connects it to the Blue Hill peninsula. The island is approximately 40 miles from Route 1, 70 miles from I-95.
There are two towns, Deer Isle on the north half, Stonington on the south, with about 4000 year-round residents. Many smaller islands surround Deer Isle, some held in public trust for all to enjoy.
The area accommodates primarily low impact tourism: hiking, sailing, photography, kayaking, painting, nature study. Many people come just to relax in a quiet setting on the beautiful coast.
Overnight accommodations in our area are limited. Reserve before you come!
There is a wide choice of restaurants from simple crab roll “take-outs” to elegant gourmet dining. Most restaurants are small with the owner/chef on site. Lobster dinners are a must, as these are some of the best lobsters in the world – as fresh as they come.
Christina Tree’s book Maine: An Explorer’s Guide is the best description of our particular area.
